What is a Whitepaper?

A whitepaper is a formal document published by a cryptocurrency or blockchain project before or shortly after its launch. It explains the project's purpose, the problem it solves, the technology it uses, how the tokens are distributed (tokenomics), the development roadmap, and the team behind it. The Bitcoin whitepaper, written by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2008, is the most famous example in crypto history.

Why Whitepapers Matter

Reading a whitepaper is the most important step in researching any cryptocurrency investment. It is the primary source of truth about what a project is actually trying to do, as opposed to the hype you might see on Twitter, Telegram, or YouTube.

What to Look For in a Whitepaper

• Clear problem statement: Does the project solve a real problem that actually needs a blockchain solution?
• Technical feasibility: Is the technology they describe actually buildable? (You do not need to be an engineer - if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.)
• Tokenomics: How many tokens exist? What percentage goes to the team, investors, and the public? A project where 50%+ goes to the team is a major red flag.
• Team: Are the founders named and verifiable on LinkedIn? Anonymous teams are higher risk.
• Roadmap: Are there realistic milestones with reasonable timelines?

Red Flags in Whitepapers

• Copied text from other projects (plagiarized whitepapers are common in crypto scams).
• Unrealistic promises ("10,000 transactions per second with zero fees and full decentralization").
• No technical detail - just marketing language.
• No named team members.
• Tokenomics heavily weighted toward insiders with short or no vesting periods.
