Market Cap (short for Market Capitalization) is the total value of all tokens or coins currently in circulation for a particular cryptocurrency. It is calculated with a simple formula:
Market Cap = Current Price x Circulating Supply
For example, if Bitcoin is priced at Rs 50,00,000 per coin and there are 19.5 million BTC in circulation, Bitcoin's market cap = Rs 50,00,000 x 19,500,000 = approximately Rs 975 lakh crore.
Why Market Cap Matters More Than Price
Many Indian beginners make the mistake of buying a coin simply because its price is "cheap" - for example, a coin priced at Rs 0.50 seems much cheaper than Bitcoin at Rs 50 lakhs. But market cap gives a much better picture of a coin's actual size and potential.
A coin priced at Rs 0.50 with 100 billion tokens in circulation has a market cap of Rs 5,000 crore. It may already be quite large. A coin at Rs 50 lakhs with only 1,000 total coins has a market cap of just Rs 500 crore - actually smaller.
Market Cap Categories
- Large-cap (over $10 billion): Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana. More stable, lower risk, lower potential returns.
- Mid-cap ($1 billion - $10 billion): Established projects with some track record. Medium risk and reward.
- Small-cap (under $1 billion): Newer or niche projects. Higher potential gains but much higher risk of failure.
- Micro-cap (under $100 million): Very high risk - many are speculative or outright scams.
