What is Altcoin?

Any cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin - including Ethereum, Solana, Cardano, and thousands of others.

What is an Altcoin?

Altcoin is short for "alternative coin" - any cryptocurrency that is not Bitcoin. This includes well-known names like Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), Ripple (XRP), Cardano (ADA), and Polygon (MATIC), as well as thousands of smaller tokens and meme coins. Ethereum is technically an altcoin, though it is the second largest cryptocurrency by market cap.

Why Were Altcoins Created?

Bitcoin was designed for one primary purpose: decentralized peer-to-peer digital money. Developers created altcoins to do different things:

  • Ethereum: Added programmable smart contracts to enable DeFi and NFTs.
  • Ripple (XRP): Built for fast and cheap international bank settlements.
  • Solana: Designed for ultra-fast, low-cost transactions (often sub-1 rupee).
  • Chainlink: Provides real-world data to smart contracts (price feeds, weather data, sports scores).

Altcoin Season

In crypto bull markets, a pattern called "altcoin season" often occurs: Bitcoin's price rises first, then profits rotate into Ethereum, and then into smaller altcoins seeking higher returns. During altcoin season, small-cap coins can gain 10x-100x in weeks. However, they also crash just as dramatically in bear markets.

Risk Warning for Indian Investors

The vast majority of altcoins (especially small-cap coins) lose 90-99% of their value from peak to trough in bear markets and never recover. Many are outright scams. Indian investors have lost significant amounts to obscure altcoins promoted on Telegram and YouTube. Stick to top 20-50 coins by market cap and do thorough research (DYOR) before investing in smaller projects.
