What is Halving?

A programmed event in Bitcoin where the reward for mining a new block is cut in half, reducing the rate of new Bitcoin supply.

What is Bitcoin Halving?

Bitcoin halving is a pre-programmed event that occurs approximately every four years (every 210,000 blocks). During a halving, the reward that Bitcoin miners receive for successfully mining a new block is cut in half. This reduces the rate at which new Bitcoin enters circulation, making Bitcoin more scarce over time.

The Halving History

  • 2009 (launch): Block reward = 50 BTC
  • November 2012 (1st halving): Reward reduced to 25 BTC. Bitcoin price was ~$12; one year later it reached ~$1,000.
  • July 2016 (2nd halving): Reward reduced to 12.5 BTC. Bitcoin was ~$650; 18 months later it reached ~$20,000.
  • May 2020 (3rd halving): Reward reduced to 6.25 BTC. Bitcoin was ~$9,000; 18 months later it reached ~$69,000.
  • April 2024 (4th halving): Reward reduced to 3.125 BTC. The next halving is expected around 2028.

Why Does Halving Affect Price?

Basic supply and demand: if the demand for Bitcoin remains constant or grows, but the new supply being produced every day drops in half, prices tend to rise over time. Miners also have less revenue, so they may sell less Bitcoin to cover operating costs, further reducing sell pressure in the market.

Important Caution

While three out of three past halvings have been followed by major bull runs, this does not guarantee the same will happen in 2024-2025. Crypto markets are now much larger and more influenced by macroeconomic factors (US interest rates, global liquidity, institutional inflows via ETFs) than pure on-chain mechanics. Invest based on long-term conviction rather than halving speculation alone.
