What is Proof of Work?
Proof of Work (PoW) is the original method used by Bitcoin to confirm transactions and add new blocks to the blockchain. Miners (people running specialized computers) compete to solve complex mathematical puzzles. The first miner to solve the puzzle gets to add the next block of transactions and earns a Bitcoin reward (currently 3.125 BTC per block after the 2024 halving).
How the "Puzzle" Works
The puzzle involves finding a special number (called a "nonce") that, when combined with the transaction data and hashed, produces an output that meets certain criteria. There is no shortcut - miners must try billions of random numbers until they find one that works. The more computing power you have, the more guesses you can make per second.
The Energy Debate
Bitcoin mining consumes enormous amounts of electricity - roughly as much as a mid-sized country. In India, there have been discussions about using excess power from renewable sources for mining. Some mining farms are being set up in states like Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh where power is relatively cheap.
