Which network to choose when sending USDT or other tokens
Why this choice matters more than any fee
The same token — USDT, for example — exists on several different blockchains. TRC20 is USDT on TRON, ERC20 is USDT on Ethereum, BEP20 is USDT on BNB Chain. They are not interchangeable.
If you send TRC20 USDT to an address that only accepts ERC20 USDT, the funds do not bounce back. They are frequently unrecoverable. This is the single most common way people permanently lose crypto, and it costs far more than any fee difference.

For most Indian users moving USDT between exchanges, TRC20 is the right default — it is cheap, fast, and supported almost everywhere. That is why a large share of global USDT transfers happen on TRON rather than Ethereum.
The rule that prevents the loss
- Start at the receiving end. Open the deposit page on the destination exchange first and see which networks it offers for that token.
- Copy the deposit address from that page, for the specific network you chose.
- Select the same network on the sending side. Not a similar one — the same one.
- Send a small test amount first. A few dollars. Confirm it arrives before sending the rest.
- Only then send the full amount.
The test transaction is the step people skip, and it is the one that turns a catastrophic mistake into a trivial one.
Why addresses look similar but are not
Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon and several other networks use the same address format, starting 0x. The same address string can therefore be valid on all of them — and you may control it on one and not another.
TRON addresses start with T and are visibly different, which is why TRC20 mistakes are usually caught. The 0x networks are where the expensive errors happen, because nothing looks wrong.
If you already sent to the wrong network
Recovery depends entirely on who controls the destination address.
- You control the private key for that address on the receiving chain — recovery is usually possible. Import the wallet on the correct network and the funds should be visible.
- You sent to an exchange deposit address — recovery depends on the exchange. Some will restore funds for a fee on supported networks; many will not. Contact support immediately with the transaction hash.
- You sent to an address nobody controls — the funds are gone.

Which networks the major exchanges support
Support differs by platform and by asset, so check the deposit page rather than assuming. Between them, Binance, Bybit and CoinDCX cover TRC20 and the main EVM networks for USDT, which is why TRC20 works as a default for moving funds between them.
Cost in context
On a ₹10,000 transfer, choosing ERC20 over TRC20 during congestion can cost several hundred rupees in fees. That is worth avoiding — but it is a rounding error next to sending on a network the destination does not support, which can cost the entire amount.
Optimise for correctness first, cost second.
What the network actually determines
The network is not a setting on the token — it is where the token exists. USDT on TRON and USDT on Ethereum are separate balances recorded on separate ledgers by separate validator sets. Tether issues both, and they are redeemable against the same reserves, but a transfer on one has no effect on the other.
That is why the choice is not a preference. It is a statement about which ledger you want the funds to move on, and the destination must be watching that same ledger.
Getting the native token for gas
Every network charges its fee in its own native token. To move USDT on TRON you need a little TRX; on BNB Chain you need BNB; on Ethereum you need ETH.
This catches people who receive tokens into a self-custody wallet on a chain they have never used: the balance is visible and cannot be moved, because there is nothing to pay the fee with. The fix is to send a small amount of the native token to that address first. Exchanges handle this internally, which is why the problem only appears with self-custody.
Which network an exchange supports is not fixed
Support varies by exchange and by asset, and changes over time. A platform may accept USDT on four networks and the same platform may accept a smaller token on only one. Never assume based on a previous transfer — check the deposit page each time for the specific asset.
