How to Transfer Crypto Between Exchanges
Step-by-step transfer between crypto exchanges
When you actually need to do this
The common setup is an FIU-registered Indian exchange such as CoinDCX for rupee conversion, paired with an international platform like Binance, Bybit or Bitget for wider coin selection and lower trading fees.
Most Indian users end up on two platforms: an FIU-registered Indian exchange for rupee conversion, and an international exchange for coin selection and lower fees. Moving assets between them is a routine operation and the one where costly mistakes cluster.
The transfer, step by step
- Start at the destination. Open the deposit page on the receiving exchange, pick the asset, and see which networks it offers.
- Choose the network — for USDT this is usually TRC20. See choosing the network.
- Copy the deposit address from that page, and the memo or tag if the asset needs one.
- Go to the sending exchange, open withdrawal, paste the address, and select the same network.
- Send a small test amount — a few dollars — and wait for it to arrive.
- Send the rest once the test has credited.
Step five is skipped by almost everyone and is the step that prevents almost every disaster.
What it costs
| Cost | Typical | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Withdrawal fee | Flat, per asset and network | Varies hugely — TRC20 is usually a fraction of ERC20 |
| Network fee | Included in the withdrawal fee | Charged by the chain, not the exchange |
| Deposit fee | Usually none | Most exchanges do not charge to receive |
| Spread | None | A transfer is not a trade |
Because withdrawal fees are flat, transfers are proportionally expensive for small amounts. Moving ₹2,000 with a ₹150 fee costs 7.5%; moving ₹50,000 with the same fee costs 0.3%. Batch transfers rather than making many small ones.
Choosing which asset to move
You do not have to move the asset you hold. If you hold a token with an expensive withdrawal fee, it is often cheaper to convert to USDT on the sending exchange, transfer USDT on TRC20, and convert back on the destination.
In India that convenience has a tax cost worth knowing: each conversion is a taxable transfer under Section 115BBH, so two conversions create two taxable events. Compare the fee saving against the tax and record-keeping before doing it.
Tax on moving your own crypto
Transferring between two accounts you control is not a disposal and is not taxable. No sale occurred and no consideration was received.
It still needs recording. Under Schedule VDA you report transfers that are disposals, and you need to be able to show that an outflow from one platform and an inflow to another were the same coins rather than a sale followed by a purchase. Without that record the two legs look like two taxable events.
Things that go wrong
- Wrong network — the dominant cause of loss. See recovery options.
- Missing memo or tag — usually recoverable through support.
- Below minimum deposit — some exchanges discard small deposits.
- Withdrawal locked — new accounts, recent password changes and new allowlist entries often carry a 24-hour hold.
- Asset not supported — the receiving exchange may not list it at all.
Withdrawal allowlists are worth the friction
Most exchanges let you restrict withdrawals to a pre-approved list of addresses. Once enabled, an attacker with your password and 2FA still cannot send funds anywhere you have not already approved, and adding a new address triggers a waiting period.
For anyone transferring between the same two exchanges regularly, this costs nothing after the initial setup and removes the single worst outcome of an account compromise. Set it up once, before you need it.
Why the exchange, not the chain, usually delays you
People assume a slow transfer means a congested blockchain. More often the delay is on the sending exchange, before the transaction is broadcast at all — held for a risk review, batched with others, or waiting out a security hold.
The test is whether a transaction hash exists. No hash means it has not reached the chain and the sending platform still has it. A hash means the exchange is finished and anything remaining is the network or the destination.
