Crypto KYC Rejected: How to Fix It
Why crypto exchange KYC gets rejected in India
Why KYC is required at all
Since crypto was brought under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act in 2023, FIU-IND-registered platforms are reporting entities with statutory identity-verification obligations. A platform offering to skip KYC is either unregistered or not operating within the framework.
The common rejection reasons
Most rejections are mundane document problems rather than anything substantive.
| Cause | Fix |
|---|---|
| Name mismatch across PAN, Aadhaar and bank | Use the name exactly as on PAN, including middle name and spelling |
| Blurred, cropped or glare-affected image | Retake in even light, all four corners visible, no flash |
| Date of birth format or mismatch | Match the document exactly |
| Address not matching the document | Use the address as printed, not your current one, unless the platform asks otherwise |
| Selfie or liveness failure | Plain background, good light, no glasses or hat, follow the prompts exactly |
| Expired or damaged document | Use a current, undamaged document |
| Editing software detected | Never crop, rotate or enhance — upload the original photo |
The name problem specifically
This causes more rejections than everything else combined. Indian documents frequently differ in small ways: a middle name on PAN but not on the bank account, an initial expanded on one and abbreviated on another, a different transliteration.
Use the name exactly as it appears on your PAN card as the reference, and make your exchange profile and linked bank account match it. Where a bank account name genuinely differs, correcting it at the bank is usually easier than arguing with exchange support.
How to resubmit
- Read the rejection reason — most platforms state it, even if tersely.
- Fix that specific issue rather than resubmitting the same documents.
- Use original photos, not screenshots or scans of scans.
- Submit once and wait. Repeated submissions can queue behind each other and slow things down.
- If rejected twice for the same reason, raise a support ticket with the rejection reference and ask what specifically failed.
If you already have funds on the platform
This is the situation worth avoiding. Many exchanges allow deposits at a lower verification level but require full KYC for withdrawal, so funds can be accessible to deposit and not to remove.
- Do not deposit more while KYC is unresolved.
- Escalate through official support only — never through anyone who contacts you offering help.
- Keep every ticket reference and screenshot.
- If the platform is FIU-registered and support is unresponsive, complaint mechanisms exist through the platform's own grievance officer, which registered entities are required to designate.
Complete KYC before you need it
The practical lesson: finish full verification when you open the account, before depositing anything meaningful, and test a small withdrawal early. Discovering a document problem during a market move, with funds locked, is the worst version of this.
Documents that work, and how to photograph them
Most rejections are image quality rather than eligibility, and the fix is mechanical.
- Shoot in even daylight, not under a lamp and never with flash — glare on a laminated card is the most common single defect.
- Place the document on a plain, dark, flat surface with all four corners inside the frame.
- Hold the camera parallel to the document, not at an angle.
- Upload the original file. Never crop, rotate, brighten or pass it through any editing app — automated checks flag edited images and reject them outright.
- Check the text is readable at full size before submitting.
How long verification takes
On Indian exchanges, automated verification often completes within minutes and manual review within a working day. Delays beyond that usually mean the submission was queued for manual checking, which is common for a mismatch the automated system could not resolve.
Submitting again while one attempt is pending generally slows things down rather than speeding them up, because the attempts queue.
Verification is not one-off
Registered platforms are required to keep customer information current, so you may be asked to re-verify — after a long period of inactivity, on a document expiry, or when transaction patterns change. Keeping your profile details accurate as they change avoids a re-verification request arriving at an awkward moment.
