What is a Crypto Wallet?

A crypto wallet is a tool that lets you store and manage your cryptocurrency. Importantly, a wallet does not actually store your coins - your coins always live on the blockchain. What a wallet stores is your "private key" - a secret password that proves you own the coins at your blockchain address and lets you authorize transactions.

The Lock and Key Analogy

Your crypto address is like a transparent bank locker that anyone can see into. Your private key is the physical key to that locker. Whoever has the key controls the locker. If you lose your private key, you lose access to your crypto forever. If someone steals your private key, they can steal all your crypto.

Types of Wallets

• Custodial wallets (Hot): Exchanges like CoinDCX, Binance, and Bybit hold your private keys for you. Convenient but risky - if the exchange is hacked or shut down, you could lose your funds. (Remember: "Not your keys, not your coins.")
• Non-custodial software wallets (Hot): Apps like MetaMask or Trust Wallet where you hold your own private key. More secure than exchanges but still connected to the internet.
• Hardware wallets (Cold): Physical devices like Ledger or Trezor that store your keys offline. The most secure option for large holdings.

The Seed Phrase

When you set up a non-custodial wallet, you receive a "seed phrase" - a list of 12 or 24 random English words. This is the master backup of your private key. Write it on paper (not on your phone or computer), store it in a safe place, and never share it with anyone. Anyone who knows your seed phrase has full access to your wallet.

Best Practice for Indian Investors

Keep a small amount on exchange wallets for active trading. Store the majority of your crypto in a non-custodial wallet or hardware wallet. This gives you both convenience and security.
