What is a Cold Wallet?

A cold wallet (also called a hardware wallet or cold storage) is a physical device that stores your cryptocurrency private keys completely offline, disconnected from the internet. Because it is offline, it is almost impossible for hackers to access remotely. Cold wallets are the gold standard of crypto security for anyone holding significant amounts of cryptocurrency.

Cold Wallet vs Hot Wallet

• Hot wallet: Any wallet connected to the internet - exchange accounts (CoinDCX, Binance), MetaMask, Trust Wallet. Convenient for daily use but vulnerable to online hacking.
• Cold wallet: A physical USB-like device (Ledger, Trezor) or even a paper with your private key written on it. Not connected to the internet. Maximum security but less convenient for frequent trading.

• Ledger Nano X/S Plus: The most popular hardware wallet. Supports 5,500+ cryptocurrencies. Priced between Rs 7,000-15,000 and available in India through authorized resellers and Amazon.
• Trezor Model T: Open-source hardware wallet. Slightly more expensive but with a touchscreen interface. Priced around Rs 16,000-20,000.
• Paper wallet: Print or write your private key/seed phrase on paper and store it safely. Free but fragile - can be destroyed by fire or water.

When Should You Get a Cold Wallet?

A common rule of thumb in the crypto community: if your crypto portfolio is worth more than you would be comfortable losing in a hack, it is time to move your holdings off exchanges and into a cold wallet. For most Indian investors, this means getting a hardware wallet when your holdings exceed Rs 50,000-1,00,000.

The Most Important Rule

Regardless of which cold wallet you choose, write your seed phrase on paper and store it in a physically safe location (a home safe, bank locker, or trusted location). Never photograph your seed phrase or type it into any website. Anyone who has your seed phrase has access to all your funds, even with a hardware wallet.
