What is an NFT?

NFT stands for Non-Fungible Token. "Non-fungible" is an economic term meaning unique and not interchangeable. A 100-rupee note is fungible - you can exchange it for another 100-rupee note and have the same thing. A painting by M.F. Husain is non-fungible - there is only one original, and it cannot be replaced by any other painting.

An NFT is a unique digital token on a blockchain that proves you own a specific digital item - an image, video clip, music file, game item, or even a tweet.

What Makes NFTs Valuable?

The blockchain record makes the ownership verifiable and the scarcity programmable. A digital artist can mint only 10 copies of a piece, and the blockchain permanently records who owns each one. Just as a signed, numbered print by a famous artist is worth more than an unlimited mass print, NFT scarcity and provenance can create collector value.

NFTs in India

• Indian artists like Amrit Pal Singh (who created the "Toy Faces" collection) have sold NFTs internationally.
• Bollywood has experimented with NFT fan experiences and celebrity content drops.
• The IPL cricket NFT platform FanCraze sold player moment clips as NFTs.

The NFT Market Reality

The NFT market peaked in 2021-2022 and crashed severely afterward. Most NFTs that sold for lakhs of rupees in 2021 are now worth very little. NFTs are highly speculative and illiquid - you can only sell an NFT if someone is willing to buy it at that price.

Beyond Digital Art

The underlying technology has genuine uses beyond art speculation - event tickets (preventing counterfeiting), game items with verifiable scarcity, digital identity credentials, and music royalty distribution are all being actively developed using NFT technology.
