Uniswap (UNI)
The world's largest decentralised exchange — swap any token without KYC.
What is Uniswap?
Uniswap is a decentralised exchange protocol built on Ethereum, first launched in 2018. Instead of using an order book like traditional exchanges, Uniswap uses Automated Market Makers (AMMs) — liquidity pools funded by users who earn trading fees in return. Anyone can swap tokens directly from their wallet without creating an account, completing KYC, or trusting a centralised custodian.
Uniswap v3 introduced concentrated liquidity, allowing liquidity providers to specify the price range in which they provide liquidity — dramatically improving capital efficiency. Uniswap v4 (2024) introduces "hooks" — customizable code that runs before and after swaps — enabling advanced features like dynamic fees, limit orders, and MEV protection to be built directly into liquidity pools.
UNI Token and Governance
The UNI governance token was airdropped to all early Uniswap users in September 2020 (each received 400 UNI worth ~$1,200 at the time). UNI holders vote on protocol governance decisions, including the potential activation of a "fee switch" that would redirect a portion of trading fees from liquidity providers to UNI holders — a long-anticipated upgrade that could make UNI a cash-flow-generating asset.
UNI for Indian Investors
UNI is available on Binance, Bybit, and CoinDCX. It is primarily a governance token — its value is tied to Uniswap's continued dominance as the top DEX and the eventual activation of protocol fee sharing. Indian investors accessing DeFi will interact with Uniswap directly when swapping ERC-20 tokens, giving UNI real utility context beyond pure speculation.
Pros for Indian Investors
- World's largest DEX by trading volume
- Governance over massive $6B+ treasury
- Fee switch potential could make UNI value-accruing
- v4 hooks enable advanced customizable AMM features
- Permissionless — no KYC required to use
- Fixed 1B supply cap
Cons to Consider
- UNI's value still dependent on fee switch activation (pending governance)
- Competes with dozens of other DEXs across chains
- DeFi complexity creates tax tracking challenges
- Gas fees on Ethereum can make small swaps uneconomical
