What is The Graph?

The Graph (GRT) is an indexing protocol for querying blockchains, often called "the Google of blockchains." Reading raw data from a blockchain is slow and inefficient - you would need to scan every block to find all transactions involving a specific address. The Graph solves this by allowing developers to define "subgraphs" - structured indexes of specific on-chain data that can be queried instantly via GraphQL API.

Most major DeFi frontends and NFT platforms - including Uniswap, Aave, Compound, OpenSea, and hundreds more - rely on The Graph for their data queries. Without The Graph (or similar indexers), DeFi interfaces would be significantly slower and more expensive to operate.

GRT Token Economics

The Graph network involves multiple participants: Indexers (who run nodes and earn GRT for serving queries), Curators (who signal which subgraphs are valuable using GRT), and Delegators (who delegate GRT to Indexers and earn a share of query fees). Indian GRT holders who don't want to run a node can participate as Delegators, earning approximately 5-10% annual returns by staking GRT to well-performing Indexers.

GRT for Indian Investors

GRT is available on Binance, Bybit, CoinDCX, and Bitget. Like Chainlink, GRT is often categorised as a "Web3 infrastructure" investment - a bet on the overall DeFi and NFT ecosystem growing, since more dApps mean more demand for data indexing. Its value is tied to query volume across the network, which grows with ecosystem activity.

Pros for Indian Investors

  • Critical infrastructure used by nearly all major DeFi protocols
  • Delegating GRT earns ~5-10% annual returns
  • Real utility - actual query fees create token demand
  • Multi-chain expansion beyond Ethereum to Solana, Polygon, and more

Cons to Consider

  • Query fees are paid in GRT but value depends on volume growth
  • Competition from centralised data providers (Alchemy, Moralis)
  • Delegation lock-up periods reduce liquidity
