Polkadot (DOT)
Layer 0 blockchain — connecting all blockchains through shared security.
What is Polkadot?
Polkadot (DOT) is a blockchain protocol developed by the Web3 Foundation and Parity Technologies, led by Gavin Wood — one of Ethereum's original co-founders and the creator of the Solidity programming language. Its core concept is "heterogeneous sharding": instead of one blockchain doing everything, Polkadot allows many specialised blockchains ("parachains") to operate in parallel, sharing security from the central Relay Chain.
This architecture means a parachain can be optimised for DeFi, another for identity, another for gaming — all secured by the same DOT validator set and able to communicate with each other trustlessly via Cross-Consensus Messaging (XCM).
Polkadot 2.0 and Coretime
Polkadot 2.0 is a major architecture revision that replaces the slot auction system (where parachains bid for fixed 2-year slots) with "Coretime" — a flexible, on-demand blockspace marketplace where developers can rent computation as needed. This makes Polkadot more accessible to small projects and reduces capital requirements, potentially increasing ecosystem development velocity.
DOT for Indian Investors
Polkadot's staking returns are among the highest of major proof-of-stake networks — approximately 12–15% annually — but these are nominal returns in DOT, and the inflationary issuance means the effective real return is lower. You need a minimum amount of DOT to nominate validators, though liquid staking options are available via protocols like Acala.
DOT is available on Binance, Bybit, and CoinDCX. It is generally considered a longer-term bet on the multi-chain thesis — the idea that the future of blockchain is many specialised chains communicating, not one monolithic chain doing everything.
Pros for Indian Investors
- Built by Ethereum co-founder Gavin Wood
- High staking returns (~12–15% nominal)
- Unique parachain / shared security model
- Active ecosystem with 100+ parachains
- Strong developer tooling and documentation
Cons to Consider
- No hard supply cap — inflationary
- Slower development pace than Cosmos or Ethereum L2s
- Parachain slot auctions have been replaced but ecosystem rebuilding
- Complex architecture is hard for casual investors to evaluate
- DOT has underperformed some competitors in recent cycles
