NEAR Protocol (NEAR)
The AI blockchain — Chain Abstraction for a multi-chain future.
What is NEAR Protocol?
NEAR Protocol is a proof-of-stake blockchain launched in 2020, designed with developer experience and end-user simplicity at its core. Its technical foundation is "Nightshade Sharding" — a method of splitting the blockchain into parallel "shards" that process transactions simultaneously, enabling near-linear scaling as more shards are added.
NEAR has made "Chain Abstraction" its 2024–2026 strategic focus — technology that allows users to control accounts across multiple blockchains (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana) using a single NEAR account and multi-party computation (MPC) for signing. This addresses one of crypto's biggest UX problems: users managing dozens of different wallets across chains.
NEAR and AI Integration
NEAR has positioned itself as the blockchain most aligned with AI adoption. The NEAR AI division is building an open-source AI assistant and agent framework on NEAR, with the thesis that AI agents interacting with blockchain services will be a major use case. Illia Polosukhin, NEAR's co-founder, is also a co-author of the original "Attention Is All You Need" paper — the research that created the Transformer architecture underlying all modern LLMs. This gives NEAR significant credibility in the AI + crypto narrative.
NEAR for Indian Investors
NEAR is available on Binance, Bybit, and CoinDCX. Staking NEAR earns approximately 8–10% annually by delegating to validators. The AI narrative makes NEAR attractive for investors who believe AI + blockchain will be a major theme in the 2025–2027 cycle. Its Chain Abstraction technology, if successfully adopted, could make NEAR a core infrastructure layer across the multi-chain ecosystem.
Pros for Indian Investors
- Led by AI research co-author (Transformer paper)
- Chain Abstraction across Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana
- Nightshade Sharding for horizontal scaling
- Staking returns of ~8–10%
- Developer-friendly with human-readable account names
- Strong AI + blockchain positioning
Cons to Consider
- Relatively small DeFi ecosystem vs Solana or Ethereum
- Chain Abstraction still maturing technically
- AI blockchain narrative crowded (many competitors)
- NEAR supply is inflationary (5% annual issuance, partially offset by burns)
