Maker (MKR)
Governing DAI - the crypto-native decentralised stablecoin.
What is Maker?
Maker (MKR) is the governance token of MakerDAO, one of the oldest and most important DeFi protocols. MakerDAO manages the creation of DAI - a decentralised stablecoin soft-pegged to the US Dollar. Users generate DAI by locking collateral (ETH, wBTC, stablecoins, real-world assets) into "vaults" at overcollateralisation ratios. MKR holders vote on risk parameters including collateral types, stability fees, and debt ceilings.
MKR's value accrual mechanism is the "Smart Burn Engine" - when MakerDAO generates surplus revenue (from stability fees and liquidation penalties), the protocol uses that surplus to buy MKR from the open market and burn it. This creates deflationary pressure directly tied to protocol revenue. With MakerDAO generating tens of millions of dollars annually, the burn rate is meaningful relative to the small 1 million MKR supply.
MakerDAO Endgame
MakerDAO's "Endgame" plan restructures the protocol into multiple "SubDAOs" each managing specific collateral types and strategies. This plan also introduces new tokens (NewGovToken and NewStable) and aims to make DAI more scalable. The rebranding of MakerDAO to "Sky" and DAI to "USDS" is part of this Endgame transition.
MKR for Indian Investors
MKR has one of the most compelling fundamental value cases in DeFi - it is governance over a revenue-generating stablecoin protocol, with direct value accrual through token burns. Available on Binance, Bybit, and CoinDCX. MKR's high unit price (typically thousands of dollars) means fractional purchases are needed for most Indian retail investors.
Pros for Indian Investors
- Direct value accrual via Smart Burn Engine using protocol revenue
- Governs DAI - the most battle-tested decentralised stablecoin
- Fixed 1 million supply cap with deflationary burns
- Protocol revenue from real usage - not dependent on token speculation
Cons to Consider
- High unit price makes it less accessible for small retail investors
- Endgame plan adds complexity and transition risk
- Regulatory risk around DAI as an algorithmic-adjacent stablecoin
