What is Litecoin?
Litecoin (LTC) was created by Charlie Lee in 2011 as a modified fork of Bitcoin. Its primary improvements over Bitcoin are: 4x faster block times (2.5 minutes), 4x larger supply cap (84 million LTC), and use of Scrypt rather than SHA-256 for mining — originally to make mining more accessible to consumer hardware (though ASIC miners now dominate LTC mining too).
Litecoin has historically been used as a testing ground for Bitcoin improvements. Segregated Witness (SegWit) and the Lightning Network were both tested on Litecoin before Bitcoin. Its network has operated continuously since 2011 with no major incidents — making it one of the most battle-tested blockchains in existence.
