What is Internet Computer?

Internet Computer (ICP) is a blockchain network developed by DFINITY Foundation, launched in May 2021. Its core ambition is to extend the internet itself into a public computing platform - allowing developers to build and host websites, enterprise applications, and DeFi protocols entirely on-chain, without relying on traditional cloud providers like AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure.

ICP uses a novel consensus mechanism called "Chain Key Cryptography" that allows the network to finalise transactions in 1-2 seconds. Smart contracts on ICP are called "canisters" and can store data, run computations, and serve web content directly to users' browsers - making fully on-chain web applications practical for the first time.

ICP for Indian Developers and Investors

ICP is particularly interesting for Indian software developers and tech investors who understand cloud infrastructure. The vision of replacing AWS with a decentralised alternative aligns with India's growing concern about data sovereignty and cloud dependency. ICP is available on Binance, Bybit, and Bitget for Indian investors.

ICP staking is done through the "Network Nervous System" (NNS), ICP's on-chain governance system. You lock ICP into "neurons" for a period (8 days to 8 years) and earn voting rewards of approximately 8-15% annually, with longer lock periods earning higher returns.

Investment Risks

ICP launched at a very high valuation in 2021 and experienced one of the most dramatic price declines in crypto history (from ~$700 to under $4). Long-term holders from the launch have faced significant losses. The project continues active development, but adoption of its unique development model has been slow compared to Ethereum's ecosystem.
