What is GMX?

GMX is a decentralised exchange for spot and perpetual futures trading, launched on Arbitrum in 2021 and expanded to Avalanche. Unlike most DEXs that use Automated Market Makers, GMX uses a multi-asset pool called GLP (GMX Liquidity Pool) - liquidity providers deposit assets (ETH, BTC, USDC, etc.) into GLP and act as the counterparty to all trades. GLP holders earn 70% of protocol fees while GMX stakers receive 30%.

GMX's "real yield" model distributes fees in ETH (on Arbitrum) and AVAX (on Avalanche) rather than printing new native tokens. This means stakers receive genuine cash-flow-generating yield from actual trading activity - not inflationary token emissions that dilute value.

GMX Real Yield for Indian DeFi Investors

Indian DeFi investors who are tired of chasing high APYs that evaporate due to token inflation may find GMX's real yield model compelling. Staking GMX earns approximately 10-25% annually in ETH and esGMX (escrowed GMX that vests over time), depending on trading volumes. The higher the trading volume on GMX, the higher the yield - directly linking staker returns to protocol usage.

GMX is available on Binance, Bybit, and Bitget. To actually use GMX for trading or liquidity provision, you need an Arbitrum wallet (MetaMask connected to Arbitrum network). GMX v2 (2023) introduced isolated market pools and improved fee structures to attract more trading volume.

Pros for Indian Investors

  • "Real yield" - fees paid in ETH/AVAX not inflationary native tokens
  • Fixed 13.25 million GMX supply cap
  • High trading volumes on Arbitrum generate meaningful staker returns
  • GLP provides capital-efficient liquidity provision

Cons to Consider

  • GLP holders face directional risk as counterparty to all trades
  • Staking yield varies significantly with trading volume cycles
  • Competition from dYdX, Hyperliquid, and other perpetual DEXs
