What is Filecoin?

Filecoin (FIL) is a decentralised storage network launched in 2020 by Protocol Labs (the team behind IPFS). It creates an open marketplace where users who need to store data can pay storage providers (miners) in FIL, and storage providers compete on price and reliability. Unlike centralised cloud storage (AWS S3, Google Cloud Storage), Filecoin distributes data across thousands of independent providers worldwide.

Filecoin uses novel consensus mechanisms: Proof of Replication (proving that a storage provider has stored a unique copy of the data) and Proof of Spacetime (proving that the data has been continuously stored over time). Storage providers must commit collateral in FIL to participate, ensuring accountability.

Filecoin Use Cases

Filecoin is used for storing NFT metadata (most major NFT platforms use IPFS + Filecoin for decentralised metadata storage), archiving public datasets, and storing blockchain data. The Filecoin Virtual Machine (FVM) launched in 2023, allowing smart contracts to be written on Filecoin - enabling programmable storage and DeFi built on top of storage primitives.

FIL for Indian Investors

FIL is available on Binance, Bybit, and CoinDCX. Indian investors with technical backgrounds often view Filecoin as an infrastructure bet on Web3 storage demand growing over time. Storage providers in India can participate by contributing disk space, though the economics require significant capital (FIL collateral) and technical setup.

FIL experienced a significant price decline from its 2021 highs and has been gradually recovering. Its long-term value proposition depends on real demand for decentralised storage growing to justify the network's token economics.

Pros for Indian Investors

  • Real utility - decentralised storage with paying customers
  • FVM enables smart contracts and DeFi on top of storage
  • NFT metadata storage is a proven use case
  • Open marketplace creates competitive pricing vs centralised cloud

Cons to Consider

  • Complex economics - storage mining requires significant FIL collateral
  • Price far below 2021 highs; slow recovery
  • Competition from Arweave, Storj, and centralised cloud providers
