Ethereum (ETH)
The programmable blockchain — powering DeFi, NFTs, and Web3.
What is Ethereum?
Ethereum (ETH) is a decentralised blockchain platform launched in 2015 by Vitalik Buterin and co-founders. Unlike Bitcoin, which is primarily a store of value, Ethereum was designed as a programmable blockchain — a platform that developers can build applications on top of using "smart contracts." These self-executing contracts power everything from DeFi lending protocols and decentralised exchanges to NFT marketplaces and token issuance.
Ethereum completed its historic transition from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake in September 2022 (called "The Merge"), reducing its energy consumption by over 99%. This upgrade also made ETH potentially deflationary — when network fees (burned as part of EIP-1559) exceed newly issued ETH, the total supply decreases.
Ethereum for Indian Investors
Ethereum is the second most widely held crypto asset among Indian investors, typically held alongside Bitcoin as the two-asset foundation of a portfolio. ETH/INR pairs are available on Binance, CoinDCX, Bybit, and Bitget. You can buy fractions of a single ETH — as little as ₹100 worth — on most platforms.
Indian investors with a 2–5 year time horizon often hold ETH alongside BTC, with the thesis that Ethereum's ecosystem utility will drive long-term demand as DeFi, tokenisation of real-world assets (RWA), and institutional Web3 adoption grow. Ethereum spot ETFs are now live in the US market, adding to institutional legitimacy.
Ethereum also offers staking rewards. By staking ETH, you earn approximately 3–5% annual yield. This is available through liquid staking platforms like Lido or directly on exchanges. Note that staking rewards are taxable as income in India at the point of receipt.
Ethereum Tax in India
All ETH gains are taxed at 30% flat in India with no long-term holding exemption. Staking rewards are treated as income at their value when received. DeFi interactions (swaps, liquidity provision) can each trigger taxable events — maintaining detailed transaction records is essential. Use Koinly or ClearTax for automated Ethereum tax reporting that handles all Ethereum transactions including DeFi.
How to Buy Ethereum in India
Sign up on Binance, Bybit, CoinDCX, or Bitget, complete KYC, fund your account via P2P bank transfer in INR, and buy ETH at the spot price or set a limit order. For DeFi participation, you will also need a Web3 wallet like MetaMask — but start with exchange custody while you learn the basics.
