Compound (COMP)
DeFi lending pioneer - earn interest on crypto without a bank.
What is Compound?
Compound (COMP) is a decentralised lending protocol on Ethereum where users can supply assets to earn interest or borrow assets by depositing collateral. Interest rates are determined algorithmically based on supply and demand - when borrowing demand is high, rates rise, and when demand falls, rates decrease. All positions are over-collateralised, and liquidations happen automatically when collateral falls below the required ratio.
Compound holds a special place in DeFi history: the June 2020 launch of COMP token distribution to users (lenders and borrowers) launched the "yield farming" phenomenon where users moved capital across DeFi protocols to maximise returns on their governance token rewards. This ignited "DeFi Summer" 2020, contributing to the broader crypto bull market.
COMP Governance
COMP gives holders proportional voting power over Compound's protocol parameters: interest rate models, supported assets, collateral factors, and reserve factors. COMP governance has been one of the most actively used in DeFi, with Compound III (Comet) architecture launched in 2022 as a major redesign focusing on risk management and capital efficiency.
COMP for Indian Investors
COMP is available on Binance, Bybit, and CoinDCX. Indian DeFi users who lend stablecoins or crypto on Compound earn interest rates that vary with market conditions. COMP's value proposition is governance over a historically significant protocol that continues to operate reliably, though it has lost some market share to Aave in recent years. The fixed 10 million supply cap limits dilution.
Pros for Indian Investors
- Pioneered DeFi lending - battle-tested since 2019
- Fixed 10 million COMP supply cap
- Compound III redesign improved capital efficiency
- Active governance with meaningful protocol control
Cons to Consider
- Lost market share to Aave in recent years
- Interest rates vary with market demand - not predictable
- Smart contract risk inherent in all DeFi protocols
