Cardano (ADA)
Research-driven smart contracts — peer-reviewed blockchain development.
What is Cardano?
Cardano (ADA) is a third-generation blockchain platform developed by Input Output Hong Kong (IOHK), led by Charles Hoskinson. Unlike most other blockchains, Cardano's development is guided by peer-reviewed academic research — every major upgrade goes through formal verification and academic publication before deployment. This makes development slower than competitors but, in theory, more secure and mathematically sound.
Cardano launched its smart contract functionality (called "Plutus") in 2021 and has since been building out its DeFi ecosystem, though it lags behind Ethereum and Solana in total value locked. Its native staking mechanism is unique: you can delegate ADA to a stake pool and earn approximately 4% annual returns without locking your tokens — you can spend or move your ADA at any time while still earning staking rewards.
Cardano for Indian Investors
ADA is available on Binance, Bybit, CoinDCX, and most major exchanges. Its staking mechanism is particularly attractive for long-term holders who want to earn passive income without locking their funds in a DeFi protocol. Staking ADA is done directly from a native wallet like Yoroi or Daedalus, making it one of the simpler staking experiences in crypto.
Cardano is developing real-world use cases in Africa, including digital identity and supply chain applications, which gives it a development narrative beyond pure DeFi speculation. The Cardano community is one of the most engaged and patient in crypto — holders (called "ADA HODLers") are known for long-term conviction.
However, Cardano's smart contract ecosystem is significantly smaller than Ethereum's and has been slower to attract developers and TVL (Total Value Locked). This is the main criticism from the investment perspective.
