What is Axie Infinity?
Axie Infinity (AXS) is a blockchain-based game developed by Vietnamese studio Sky Mavis, launched on its own Ronin sidechain in 2021 for lower fees. Players collect NFT creatures called "Axies," build teams of three, and battle other players. Players earn Smooth Love Potion (SLP) tokens through gameplay, which can be sold for real money. At its peak in 2021, Filipino players were earning more from Axie Infinity than local minimum wage, creating a global media sensation and the "play-to-earn" category.
AXS is the governance token that allows staking for rewards and voting on game development decisions. The Axie ecosystem also includes breeding mechanics (combining Axies to create new ones), a land system, and expanding game modes.
The Ronin Bridge Hack
In March 2022, the Ronin bridge (connecting Ronin to Ethereum) suffered the largest DeFi hack in history at that time - $625 million in ETH and USDC stolen by the Lazarus Group (North Korean state hackers). Sky Mavis compensated users and rebuilt the bridge with enhanced security. This event significantly damaged trust and AXS price, and the game has been working to rebuild its player base since.
