What is Aave?

Aave (AAVE) is a decentralised lending protocol originally launched as ETHLend in 2017 and rebranded to Aave in 2020. Users can supply cryptocurrency assets to liquidity pools and earn variable interest rates, or they can deposit collateral and borrow other assets against it. All loans are overcollateralised, meaning borrowers must provide more value in collateral than they borrow - ensuring solvency without requiring credit checks or identity verification.

Aave introduced several DeFi innovations including flash loans (loans that must be repaid in the same transaction block, used by developers for arbitrage and collateral swaps), rate switching (users can switch between stable and variable interest rates), and now operates its own stablecoin GHO, minted by Aave users against their supplied collateral.

Aave Yields for Indian Investors

Indian investors with stablecoins (USDT, USDC) can supply them to Aave to earn yield - typically 3-8% annually depending on demand and market conditions, significantly higher than Indian bank savings rates. However, DeFi yields carry smart contract risk: if Aave is exploited, suppliers may lose funds. Aave has maintained a strong security record since 2020 with no major exploits, but risk cannot be zero.

AAVE Governance and Safety Module

AAVE holders can stake AAVE in the Safety Module, earning staking rewards (approximately 4-8% annually) while providing a backstop in case of protocol shortfall events. This staking creates a financial commitment from token holders to the protocol's health. AAVE is available on Binance, Bybit, CoinDCX, and Bitget.

Pros for Indian Investors

  • Largest DeFi lending protocol with $10B+ in TVL
  • Multiple revenue streams - interest, flash loans, GHO minting fees
  • Fixed 16 million supply cap
  • Safety Module staking earns yield while backing protocol solvency

Cons to Consider

  • Smart contract risk - DeFi protocols can be exploited
  • Yield rates fluctuate with market borrowing demand
  • Complex risk parameters require monitoring for borrowers
