Buying crypto with UPI: which exchanges support it

Does UPI work for crypto?

Yes, on FIU-registered Indian exchanges that support it. UPI is the fastest way to fund a crypto account in India — the transfer is instant and there is usually no fee on the deposit itself.

What UPI does not do is let you pay a merchant in crypto, or fund an international exchange directly. It moves rupees from your bank to the exchange; everything after that happens on the exchange.

The steps

  1. Open an account on an exchange supporting UPI deposits, such as CoinDCX.
  2. Complete KYC with PAN and Aadhaar. Do this fully before depositing.
  3. Link a bank account in your own name — the name must match your PAN.
  4. Choose UPI as the deposit method and enter the amount.
  5. Approve the request in your UPI app.
  6. Once the balance appears, place your buy order — a limit order gives you control over the price.

Limits to expect

Two separate sets of limits apply and both can stop a transaction:

  • UPI limits set by NPCI and your bank — typically a per-transaction cap and a daily cap, and some banks apply lower limits to new payees.
  • Exchange limits tied to your verification level, which usually rise as verification deepens.

For larger amounts, IMPS or NEFT generally works better than UPI.

Why UPI payments for crypto get declined

This is common enough to expect. The causes, roughly in order:

  1. Bank policy. Some Indian banks decline transfers to crypto platforms. This varies by bank and changes over time.
  2. Limit exceeded — per transaction, per day, or new-payee restrictions.
  3. Name mismatch between the UPI account, PAN and exchange account.
  4. Risk flags on unusual transaction patterns.

If UPI is declined, IMPS often works, and a different bank account often works. What is not worth doing is misrepresenting the purpose of the transfer.

Buying safely

  • Use only the exchange's own app or website — never a UPI ID sent to you in a message.
  • Never pay an individual who offers to sell you crypto directly outside an escrowed P2P platform.
  • Be sceptical of anyone offering crypto below market price for a UPI payment. This is one of the most common frauds in India.
  • Check the amount and payee name in the UPI app before approving.

Tax

Buying is not a taxable event. Tax arises when you sell, at 30% under Section 115BBH with 1% TDS on the transfer. Record the date, quantity and INR cost of every purchase — that cost of acquisition is the only deduction permitted, and you need it per lot for Schedule VDA.

UPI versus the alternatives for funding

MethodSpeedBest forWatch out for
UPIInstantEveryday amountsPer-transaction and daily caps
IMPSInstantLarger amounts, any hourSmall bank charge on some accounts
NEFTMinutes to hoursLarge amountsNot instant; banking-hours dependent
P2PVariesFunding international exchangesCounterparty and account-freeze risk

For most people UPI is the right default and IMPS is the fallback when a limit blocks it. P2P is a different activity with a different risk profile and is only necessary when the destination cannot accept INR at all.

After the deposit: actually buying

Funding the account and buying are separate steps, and the second is where the price you pay is decided.

  1. Check the pair you are buying has reasonable depth — thin pairs cost more in slippage than any fee.
  2. Use a limit order so you set the price rather than accepting whatever the book offers.
  3. Check the total including fees before confirming.
  4. Record the date, quantity and INR cost immediately — you need it per lot at filing.

The UPI scam to know about

A recurring fraud in India: someone offers crypto below market rate and asks for a UPI transfer directly to them, outside any platform. Once the rupees are sent, no crypto arrives and UPI transfers cannot be reversed.

Only ever pay the exchange itself, through its own app. A UPI ID sent to you in a message is never a legitimate way to buy crypto, regardless of how the sender explains it.
