Staking Crypto: How to Earn Passive Income and What the Risks Are — SmartViewAI

You have probably heard that you can earn passive income by staking crypto. The concept sounds simple. You lock up your coins, the network uses them, and you get paid rewards. But like most things in crypto, there is more complexity underneath the surface.

What Staking Actually Is

Staking is how proof-of-stake blockchains secure themselves. Instead of using energy-intensive mining like Bitcoin, these networks ask validators to lock up (stake) their coins as collateral. In return for participating in transaction validation, validators earn rewards.

When you stake your coins, you are essentially lending your support to the network's security. The more coins staked across the network, the harder it becomes to attack.

How Much Can You Actually Earn?

Staking yields vary widely by asset and method. Here are some rough benchmarks:

  • Ethereum (ETH): 3 to 5% APR depending on network participation rates
  • Solana (SOL): 6 to 8% APR through validators
  • Cardano (ADA): Around 3 to 4% APR with no lock-up period
  • Polkadot (DOT): 10 to 15% APR with a 28-day unbonding period

These numbers shift with market conditions and network activity. Always check current rates before committing.

The Different Ways to Stake

You have several options depending on how much control you want:

  • Native staking means running your own validator node. This requires technical knowledge and, in Ethereum's case, 32 ETH.
  • Delegated staking lets you delegate your coins to an existing validator. Cardano and Solana work this way, with a lower barrier to entry and no lock-up in some cases.
  • Exchange staking is the simplest option. Platforms handle everything, but you give up custody of your coins while staking.
  • Liquid staking gives you a token representing your staked position. You can trade or use this token in DeFi while still earning rewards.

The Risks You Need to Understand

Staking is not risk-free. Here are the main things that can go wrong:

  • Lock-up periods: If you need to sell urgently, you may not be able to. Unbonding periods can last days or weeks.
  • Slashing: If the validator you delegate to acts maliciously or goes offline, you can lose a portion of your staked coins.
  • Smart contract risk: Liquid staking protocols are code. Bugs can result in loss of funds.
  • Price volatility: Earning 6% APR in SOL means nothing if SOL drops 50% while your coins are locked.

Is Staking Worth It?

For coins you plan to hold long-term anyway, staking makes sense. You are earning yield on assets you were not going to sell. But staking specifically to chase yield, without conviction in the underlying asset, is a riskier proposition.

Think of staking rewards as a bonus on top of your long-term thesis, not as the thesis itself.
